NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Officers will hold a funeral Thursday to memorialize an NYPD recruit who died days before his scheduled graduation.
Edgar Ordonez, 33, died on July 10 after having a medical episode at a department training facility in the Bronx, according to the NYPD. Ordonez was doing a training exercise at an outdoor range at Rodman’s Neck.
A funeral for the young officer will start at 10 a.m. at a church on Tinton Avenue and live streamed to the NYPD’s social media accounts. Watch the funeral live on X here.
“Edgar Ordonez was a beacon of joy and positive energy for his fellow recruits. He had the drive and determination necessary to become a New York City police officer, and he was just days away from hitting the streets and making a difference in protecting our city,” said Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry.
Ordonez’s recently graduated recruit class will attend the funeral, according to police.
