BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) – New York City plans to turn a parking lot in the Bronx into affordable housing, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development announced on Friday.

A parking site owned by the city at 351 Powers Ave. in Mott Haven will become an apartment complex with 90 units called Powerhouse Apartments. This is the latest site for affordable housing, which will serve a mix of income levels including low-income households.

The Powerhouse Apartments will also include homes for older New Yorkers and the formerly homeless. Larger families will also get the chance to apply for two- and three-bedroom units.

“Building deeply affordable housing on city-owned land is exactly the kind of step we need to take to tackle our city’s housing crisis,” said Dan Garodnick, director of the Department of City Planning. “With a 1.4% vacancy rate, it’s critical that we do all we can to urgently create the housing that New Yorkers need.”

Plans for the Powerhouse Apartments include a hub for community arts and cultural experiences and workforce development.

The ground floor will feature a 4,000-square-foot theater with seating for up to 150 people. A 3,000-square-foot space will include a workforce development area providing economic mobility programs and programming for young adults to learn construction and landscaping skills.

The development will include cameras and 24/7 desk security.

When will apartments be available?

The city is currently requesting proposals issuance from a multi-year process that leads to the construction of new affordable homes for New Yorkers. There's no set opening date for the apartment complex, as of Friday.
