From Kashmir to Kota, India’s riverfronts are getting a makeover

Littered, abandoned riverfronts are being revitalised thanks to redevelopment projects focussed on creating accessible public spaces

On a sunny morning, YouTuber Yawar Wani’s thoughts turned to the newest hangout in Srinagar.

Jhelum riverfront

, once ignored for its littered banks and stinky waters, had become a destination to be seen at over the last year. The 23-year-old did a walkthrough chatting with young Kashmiris as they jostled for selfies at the huge #Kashmir signage. It was a sign of how things had changed.
The Rs 50-crore project to redevelop the Jhelum riverfront is likely to be completed by June but it has already won hearts. “Blue skies, calm waters and a cool breeze…it is a beautiful view with a fun vibe,” Wani says. Cycle tracks, walkways for pedestrian traffic, shaded gazebos are some of the facilities that have come up in the last year.
