Former Longhorn RB Reid Watkins makes decision on his new home

1 day ago 9

After a few weeks in the transfer portal, Reid Watkins found a new home. The former Longhorns running back has committed to South Dakota State. He will join one of the top FCS programs as he begins a new chapter in his football career.

Out of high school, the All Saints Episcopal product drew interest from various programs. That list includes Tulsa, Houston, Navy, Troy, and New Mexico State. He initially chose Tulsa before changing his mind to join the Longhorns. While he came to Texas hoping to become a key piece of the offense, Watkins could not carve out a role.

During his Longorns career, Watkins appeared in one game. In the Longhorns 51-3 win over Louisiana-Monroe this past season, he recorded 14 yards on five carrier. He should get more opportunities in South Dakota, where he will have plenty of time to make an impact. Watkins still has four years of eligibility remaining.

After great consideration and a great visit I will be playing this fall for South Dakota University! @SDCoyotesFB#GoYotes 🐺 @CoachTJohansen@coachcdantew@1CoachRosie@BHoward_11@CoachBeck_PTFpic.twitter.com/bMO7vlaTcv

Last season, the Coyotes finished with an 11-3 overall record. On the ground, they were led by Charles Pierre Jr. and Travis Theis, who specialized in making life hard for the defensive coordinators. While Watkins will have to battle for playing time, he joins a talented backfield that will push him to be at his best.

With the college football season only a few months away, fans won't have to wait long to see Watkins in action. The Coyotes are scheduled to open the 2025 campaign on the road against Iowa State on August 30th. Watkins will get his first chance to play in front of the Coyotes faithful when they welcome Northern Colorado to the DakotaDome on September 13th.
