NEW YORK (PIX11) -- While February is off to a warmer start, New Yorkers are reminded to practice good hygiene as flu cases continue to soar statewide.
Through January, flu cases skyrocketed from 30,638 to 51,811 statewide, according to data compiled by the New York State Department of Health.
As of Jan. 25, there were 45,458 cases of Influenza Type A and 4,291 cases of Influenza Type B. Additionally, 2,062 reported cases of Influenza were not specified.
Of the 51,811 cases statewide, there were 23,353 reported cases of the flu and 1,449 hospitalizations in New York City.
Those with the flu should stay home until they have no symptoms and no fever within 24 hours. People are most contagious during the first 3 three days of the illness. The CDC recommends wearing a mask and covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue for those who have to go outside.
Receiving an annual flu shot and frequently washing hands helps to prevent the spread of the flu.
