Flights delayed at JFK, LGA and Newark due to storms: FAA

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- A weather system in the tri-state area is causing delays at airports in New York City and Newark late Monday night.

Inclement weather hit parts of the region and brought thunderstorms, heavy rain, strong wind gusts, and even hail. Additionally, parts of New Jersey were under a tornado warning.

Traffic management programs are in effect for all three airports, according to the FAA. In addition to delays, several flights departing the airports have also been canceled.

Departing flights out of EWR are experiencing gate hold and taxi delays between an hour and 31 minutes and an hour and 45 minutes, according to the FAA.

Flood advisory issued in NYC amid downpours

Travelers are encouraged to check with their airlines to see if their flights are affected.

Most of the severe threat should diminish by midnight, but rain is expected to linger into the early morning hours.
