Carlos Alcaraz spoke about his success mantra after he made his way through to the French Open 2024 final. On Friday, June 7 at Philippe-Chatrier, the Spaniard defeated World No.1 Jannik Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in 4 hours and 9 minutes and advanced to his maiden final at Roland Garros. After losing to Novak Djokovic in the semis last year, Alcaraz made amends this time around.

Prior to taking part in the ongoing clay-court major, Alcaraz had issues with his forearm, but the youngster has made a strong comeback. The 21-year-old also said that it’s important to “fight and suffer” in long rallies to taste success in the French Open.

“You have to find the joy in suffering. That’s the key. Even more here on clay at Roland Garros. Long rallies. 4 hour matches. 5 sets. You have to fight and suffer. As I talked with my team many times, you have to enjoy suffering,” Alcaraz said in the on-court interview.

‘One of the toughest matches’

With the win, Alcaraz also took a 5-4 lead over his Italian opponent. Alcaraz lost the opening set and went a break down in the second before making a strong comeback. He also became the youngest to reach Grand Slam finals on all 3 surfaces. Alcaraz admitted the semi-final was one of the toughest matches he has played in his “short” career.

“Probably. The toughest matches I’ve played in my short career have been against Jannik. US Open 2022... This one... That shows the great player Jannik is, the team he has, the great work he puts every day... I hope to play many many more matches like this against Jannik. Yes, this was one of the toughest matches I’ve played for sure,” Alcaraz added.

In the final, Alcaraz will be up against the winner of the other semi-final between Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud.
