MINEOLA, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A former taxi driver is accused of attacking a former colleague with an axe on Feb. 13, according to Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly.
Anthony Calvo, 34, was arraigned on attempted murder and assault charges.
The attack happened at 5:50 a.m. on Arizona Avenue in Long Beach, according to the indictment. Calvo allegedly ran up to the 60-year-old victim, who was returning home, and struck him at least three times.
The victim suffered serious injuries to his head and jaw, requiring multiple surgeries.
Calvo was previously employed as a driver at Long Beach Taxi and stopped working there in 2022, according to the indictment. The victim was a dispatcher for the company.
“A past workplace disagreement spurred this alleged horrific unprovoked attack that left a man with catastrophic injuries and clinging to life,” said DA Donnelly. “Miraculously, despite the significant trauma he had allegedly suffered at the hands of this defendant, the victim was able to drag himself to his home, bang on the door, and get help. This brutal, senseless attack will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and we will get justice for this victim.”
Calvo was remanded and is due in court on June 2.
