Epic Games reveals how much it paid in giveaways last year

Last year, the Epic Games Store, a major contender in the game sales industry since its launch in 2018, reportedly distributed free games worth $2,055. The platform, which boasts millions of users and exclusive releases like Alan Wake 2 and Assassin’s Creed Mirage, continues to offer several free games alongside its latest releases.

According to a report in MSN.com, the array of free games offered by the Epic Games Store, is said to have included many indie titles, as well as renowned games. Players have had the opportunity to claim games like Wolfenstein: The New Order, Prey, Shenmue 3, Sonic Mania, and even Grand Theft Auto 5, which temporarily crashed the Epic Games Store. Epic Games has now disclosed substantial details about the free games distributed last year.

This data is part of the Epic Games Store Year in Review, which offers insights into the digital store’s performance over the past year. The report shows that players claimed the 86 free games nearly 586 million times. Highlights from last year include the giveaway of Death Stranding in May, The Evil Within and The Evil Within 2 in October, and The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition in December.

The Epic Games Store Year in Review indicates that the digital store has seen considerable growth, reaching over 270 million PC users.

In terms of spending, PC gamers spent a total of $950 million on the Epic Games Store, marking a 16% increase. However, spending on third-party PC games saw a 13% decrease, amounting to $310 million. The top games of 2023 in terms of player spending and engagement included Genshin Impact, Rocket League, Dead Island 2, Grand Theft Auto Online, and Fortnite. Despite a challenging year, Destiny 2 made it to the epic tier, the chart’s lowest tier.
