MIDTOWN, Manhattan (PIX11) -- The Milkshakes and yogurt parfaits at Ellen's Stardust Diner will do more than satisfy a craving.
For the next month, some of the proceeds from their sale will go to the nonprofit Luv Michael. This organization aims to empower autistic individuals through meaningful employment and training. They produce organic, gluten-free granola.
Ellen Hart, owner of Ellen's Stardust Diner, recently toured the factory where the granola is made.
"It was just a fabulous experience to see that they're producing this great tasting granola and selling it," Hart told PIX11 News.
Lisa Liberatore named Luv Michael after her son Michael, who has autism.
"We have very, very intelligent individuals who can do many, many things but struggle in our society because they may suffer from severe anxiety over issues that don't bother anyone else," she said.
April is World Autism Month, beginning with the United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day on April 2.
This year marks the 17th annual World Autism Awareness Day.
