East Harlem great-grandmother needs repairs to fix reoccurring flooding

EAST HARLEM, Manhattan (PIX11) -- An East Harlem great-grandmother has been cleaning up the mess of a reoccurring flood in her bathroom for weeks now.

Cleo Dendy, 78, said she's tired of getting the runaround from the city when it comes to problems inside her apartment at the East River Houses.

Dendy's daughter Andrea Smith said it’s a constant pain to clean up. Smith said her mom spent her life taking care of children as a teacher’s aide and doesn’t deserve this.

Dendy said the water nightmare began on Jan. 15. Crews came and installed a new toilet, but she fears they did not fix the root of the problem. Dendy said the water comes out of her toilet and bathtub.

A NYCHA spokesperson provided the following statement about the issue:

“NYCHA staff addressed stoppages affecting proper drainage in the bathroom of this unit on several occasions. Most recently, staff used an electric drain snake to further clear the affected drain. Staff visited the unit today and will follow up again tomorrow to ensure the resident is satisfied," the NYCHA spokesperson said.
