THANE: The city police arrested two persons for the
murder
of an
elderly couple
who were found dead under mysterious circumstances in the rental housing of Dosti Imperia at Manpada last month.
The accused are identified as Nisar Ahmed Shaikh and Rohit Uttekar, also residents of the same building.
The deceased, Shamsher Singh (68) and wife Mina (65) had lived in a 14th floor flat of MMRDA’s rental housing scheme building in Dosti Imperia for the last five years. Singh used to work as a security guard at a nearby housing society, while Mina used to sell milk, said a police officer.
While Uttekar resided in the same building on the 16th floor, Shaikh lived in the other building on 17 floor of the rental housing scheme, said a senior police officer. Shaikh has a case of
robbery
in 2017, the police said.
The accused was familiar with the daily routine of the
senior citizen couple
and hence they hatched the conspiracy to rob the senior citizen couple. “Uttekar who resided two floors over Singh couple on the night of 4th jan, through the bathroom duct came down to their floor in a bid to carry out the burglary. He was accompanied by Shaikh,” said the police officer privy to the probe.
But as they gained access through the bathroom window, the noise alerted the couple who sensed something suspicious and hence the two got scared and strangled the couple on their bed and fled the flat from the main door leaving it open, the officer informed TOI.
The accused also took away the gold bangles of the deceased woman, said the officer.
The police kept a watch on the activities of the neighbours and others in the building and found the two suspicious and their statements two differed. Upon intense questioning, they broke down and confessed to the crime.
The police have recovered the stolen bangles from the accused.
