Dunkin' Donuts and Krispy Kreme offer free treats for National Donut Day

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Friday is National Donut Day, and Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts are celebrating the more than 60-year event with a celebration of yummy deals.

Dunkin' is offering a free donut with every beverage purchase on Friday.

"No one loves donuts and coffee more than Dunkin' and our amazing customers," said Beth Turenne, VP of category management at Dunkin'. "National Donut Day is a special day for us because it's all about celebrating that love and obsession. Plus, we get to share that joy by giving away millions of free donuts."

Krispy Kreme is offering a free donut. No purchase is necessary. However, limited-time special donuts are secluded, according to the company's website.

"Krispy Kreme fans look forward to National Doughnut Day every year, and this year, they can get their favorite for free!" said Dave Skena, Global Chief Brand Officer. "It's a sweet day all around. We can't wait to thank everyone for their love of Krispy Kreme doughnuts."

Krispy Kreme is also offering a $2 purchase with a purchase of a dozen priced regular donuts at their many locations.

The first-ever National Donut Day was celebrated in Chicago in 1938. The Salvation Army created it as a fundraiser to help those in need during the Great Depression, according to their website.
