NEW DELHI: Indian all-rounder
Shivam Dube
dedicated his
Player of the Match
award money to the ground staff at
Harare Sports Club
following the final T20I against Zimbabwe.
This gesture was in recognition of their significant efforts in maintaining the playing conditions, which often remain unacknowledged. Dube's contribution came after his notable performance in the match, where he scored 26 runs off 12 balls and took two wickets for 25 runs in his four overs, playing a pivotal role in India's victory by 42 runs.
This win secured a 4-1 series victory for India in the five-match T20I series.
Dube's decision to donate his award money was driven by a desire to highlight the essential role of the ground staff, whose dedication ensures the smooth execution of the game.
By doing so, he aimed to bring attention to the often-overlooked efforts of these individuals and provide them with some support. In his statement, Dube expressed his admiration for the ground staff's exceptional work in Zimbabwe.
"The ground staff in Zimbabwe did an exceptional job, ensuring we had excellent playing conditions. Their hard work and dedication often go unnoticed, so I wanted to show my appreciation and gratitude for their efforts," Dube told IANS.
Dube's gesture reflects an understanding of the broader ecosystem of the sport, acknowledging that the success and smooth operation of cricket matches depend on the contributions of many, including those working behind the scenes.
"By giving away my Man of the Match award money, I hoped to acknowledge their contribution and support them in a small way. It was a gesture to highlight the importance of every individual who makes the game possible, and I believe it's essential to recognise and value their hard work," he added.
India's victory in the series and Dube's individual performance were significant, yet his decision to focus on the contributions of the ground staff adds a layer of humility and gratitude to the narrative of the match.
