Driver sought after hitting 9-year-old girl in Newark: officials

NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) -- Police are searching for a driver accused of hitting a 9-year-old girl on Tuesday.

The incident happened around 7:36 a.m. at the intersection of Irvine Turner Boulevard and Spruce Street. The driver fled the scene.

Police have identified the driver as 51-year-old Sawab O. Williams of Newark. An arrest warrant has been issued for Williams, who is wanted on multiple charges.

Williams is described as 5'6'' and 240 pounds and is known to frequent the Auto Zone parking lot at 295 Springfield Avenue, Elizabeth, and Carteret.

The child was taken to University Hospital for treatment and is in stable but critical condition, officials said.
