GURGAON: The body of a
taxi driver
was found with a
bullet wound
in the head inside his cab that was parked off the Delhi-Jaipur highway in Manesar on Saturday morning.
Tracing the cab number - HR55AD/4590 -
police
identified the driver as Uday Veer, a resident of Auraiya in UP. He was shot in the temple while still in the driver's seat.
Police said they received a call around 9.30am from a passerby who spotted the cab parked near Aravalli dhaba and the body inside it. The cops suspect Uday may have been killed during an altercation, possibly by robbers or carjackers.
"He may have been shot around midnight. We are yet to find out the motive behind the murder, but it appears he may have been shot by robbers after he tried to fight them off," said Virender Kumar, the SHO of IMT Manesar police station.
Uday's family, police said, had been informed. "They have to identify the body. We will register a case after his family members lodge a formal complaint with us. For now, we have sent the body for an autopsy," Kumar added.
Police said they had seized the cab and were scanning footage from CCTV cameras installed nearby to find out the motive of the murder. The cops are also tracing Uday's connections in Gurgaon to find out if anyone nursed a grudge against him.
"The bullet was fired directly into his temple from a short distance when he was still in his seat. Did he know the killer by any chance? We have to find out," SHO Kumar said.
Street crime, especially after sundown, has been a cause for concern in Manesar. In July this year, four youths - two of them students - were apprehended for firing at a man and critically injuring him at Khoh village of Manesar.
In February, a 10-year-old boy was sexually assaulted and then murdered at a secluded place in IMT Manesar. The boy, police said, had been abducted from a ground near his house in Sector 10.
