STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A man was hospitalized after allegedly opening fire at an NYPD vehicle on Staten Island on Sunday evening, according to the police.

The incident happened around 7:30 p.m.

The 31-year-old suspect was attempting to flee a traffic stop, police say. Upon encountering another NYPD vehicle not related to the traffic stop, the driver allegedly pulled out a gun and began shooting.

No officers were hit during the incident, but they sustained injuries due to shattered glass in the NYPD cruiser, police say.

No officer discharged their weapons, police say.

The suspect suffered a medical incident and crashed his car, police say. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
