PANAJI: A man with disabilities was killed early on Tuesday morning after a tourist driving a
rented SUV
rammed his vehicle into the man's two-wheeler. Police said the tourist, Naresh Jain, 41, a resident of Vasai-Palghar, Maharashtra, was drunk at the time of the crash.
Kitu Behera, 51, a fish vendor, was riding his scooter at around 4.30am at Porvorim, and was on his way to procure and sell fish.
As he neared Delfino supermarket, Jain, who was also heading towards Panaji, lost control of the vehicle and rammed into Behera's scooter. Behera, a resident of Duler, Mapusa, sustained injuries and was shifted to
GMC
, Bambolim, where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Police arrested Jain for
drunken driving
, rash and negligent driving, and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
I t was revealed that the accused had consumed alcohol and committed the act with the knowledge that it is likely to cause death,” said ASI Sanju Salunke of the Porvorim police station. Behera’s two-wheeler was found in a completely mangled state due to the impact of the accident. Several locals who were at the site surrounded the accused.
The residents said that when they confronted those in the SUV, three persons were present. Some locals said two more men were in the SUV, and some fled the spot. In a video of the aftermath of the accident shot by locals, the accused is heard saying, “I am feeling guilty about the incident.
I am not going anywhere. I will be here until the authorities arrive”. Those present at the scene said that the Jain appeared to be driving a rented SUV. Police said that Jain will be produced before court
