NEW DELHI: Top Indian gymnast
Dipa Karmakar
made history on Sunday by securing the gold medal in the women's
vault
event at the
Asian Senior Championships
in Tashkent. The 30-year-old athlete became the first Indian to achieve this feat in the prestigious competition.
Karmakar's outstanding performance earned her an average score of 13.566 in the vault final, which took place on the concluding day of the championships.
Her impressive display of skill and precision propelled her to the top of the podium.
Kim Son Hyang
and Jo Kyong Byol, both representing North Korea, claimed the silver and bronze medals, respectively. Kim Son Hyang achieved an average score of 13.466, while
Jo Kyong Byol
secured an average of 12.966 in the highly competitive event.
Dipa, who had finished fourth in the vault final at the 2016 Rio Olympics, had won a bronze medal in the same event in the 2015 edition.
Ashish Kumar
won a bronze medal in individual floor exercise in 2015 Asian Championships. Pranati Nayak had also bagged a bronze each in vault event in the 2019 and 2022 editions.
Dipa, who returned to action last year after a 21-month suspension for a doping offence, is out of contention for the upcoming Paris Olympics.
