UNION, New Jersey (PIX11) -- A 212-foot tall tower has helped put Union, New Jersey on the map.
The owner of the water sphere, New Jersey American Water, is planning to demolish the 61-year old structure.

It's a well-recognized feature of the landscape along the Garden State Parkway and Route 22.
It was built in 1964 and was taken out of commission in the 1980s. Currently, it’s home to antennas.
Erin Banes, a spokesperson for the company, says the decision was made after careful consideration and evaluation and it will be taken down “in the coming years.”
In 2019, the company notified the township it was developing demolition plans.
“We understand and appreciate the community’s connection to the Union Water Sphere, and we have already been in contact with the Union Historical Society and plan to save parts of the tower to donate to the organization as memorabilia," Banes said.
Our top priority is public safety, and our decision reflects our responsibility to maintain a safe and reliable water infrastructure system for the communities we serve.”
Union Township officials are considering new plans for the site.
