NEW JERSEY (PIX11) – Continued delays at Newark Liberty International Airport have reached over two hours Sunday morning.
On average, departures are delayed for an average of 133 minutes Sunday morning, according to the FAA. Newark’s flight tracker shows over 130 delayed and canceled flights before 3:30 p.m.

Travelers have experienced issues out of Newark for four days now. On Friday, United Airlines announced it would cancel 35 round-trip flights per day out of Newark.
"These challenges are not new to Newark. United has been urging the US government for *years* to use its authority to effectively limit the number of flights to what the airport can realistically handle," said United CEO Scott Kirby in a statement.
The latest update from the airline came just before 10 p.m. Saturday, when thunderstorms caused further delays. Thunderstorms are expected in the region again Sunday.
Kirby and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy attributed the issues to FAA air traffic controller understaffing and a bad air traffic control system at the airport.
"In the past few days, on more than one occasion, technology that FAA air traffic controllers rely on to manage the airplanes coming in and out of Newark airport failed - resulting in dozens of diverted flights, hundreds of delayed and canceled flights," Kirby said. "Unfortunately, the technology issues were compounded as over 20% of the FAA controllers for EWR walked off the job."
