NEW JERSEY (PIX11) – For a fourth day in a row, dozens of flights are delayed and canceled out of Newark Liberty International Airport.
Nearly 100 flights scheduled to leave between 9 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. have been delayed or canceled, according to Newark’s flight tracker. Travelers were seeing delays of over two hours on average, according to the FAA.
It's the fourth straight day of significant issues out of the New Jersey airport, which Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has attributed to air traffic control system issues.
On Tuesday, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association revealed that controllers in charge of air traffic in and out of Newark Airport temporarily lost contact with the planes under their control on April 28.
Because of this, multiple workers took a leave of absence related to a traumatic event on the job, according to the union.
“This is why NATCA supports Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s efforts to upgrade and modernize our nation’s air traffic control systems and infrastructure," the union said in a statement.
On Monday, thunderstorms heightened issues at Newark and across the region's airports, all of which saw significant delays and ground stops.
