NEW YORK (PIX11) – As the back-to-school season kicks off, there are some startling numbers to keep in mind.

Data from the U.S. Department of Education showed that 1.3 million second-grade students are behind in reading and 1.7 million are behind in math.

The clinical director of Long Island Counseling, Stacy Pelletieri, has helpful tools for parents whose kids are getting ready for the new school year.
