Court rules FIFA, UEFA actions against Super League broke EU law

NEW DELHI: The

European Court of Justice

(ECJ) on Thursday has ruled that actions taken by

football governing bodies

FIFA and

UEFA

to impede the creation of the

Super League

violated

EU law

.
The ECJ declared that the rules established by

FIFA

and UEFA requiring their prior approval for any new interclub football project, including the Super League, and prohibiting clubs and players from participating in such competitions, are unlawful.

The court emphasized that its ruling does not necessarily mean an immediate authorization for the Super League project but rather signifies that FIFA and UEFA were "abusing a dominant position" in the football market.
A22 Sports, the company behind the Super League project, celebrated the decision, asserting, "We have won the right to compete. The UEFA monopoly is over. Football is free," as stated by Bernd Reichart, the CEO of A22 Sports, in a social media post.
