The Supreme Court on Thursday extended its interim order, staying trial court proceedings against Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi Chief Minister Atishi in a defamation case filed by BJP leader Rajiv Babbar in 2018.
A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and S V N Bhatti also adjourned the plea filed by Atishi and Kejriwal, who challenged a Delhi High Court order refusing to quash the defamation case.
Notably, Babbar had filed a defamation case over the AAP leaders' remarks about the alleged deletion of names of voters.
Earlier, the court had given interim relief to both leaders and stayed the hearing going on in the lower court.
Rajiv Babbar's counsel sought time to file a reply in the matter, following which the court adjourned the case for four weeks.
The high court had said that the imputations were prima facie defamatory with an intention to vilify the BJP and gain undue political mileage. It dismissed the plea by Atishi, Kejriwal and AAP former Rajya Sabha member Sushil Kumar Gupta and party leader Manoj Kumar -- challenging the defamation case in a trial court.
