NEW DELHI: The Constitution and its framer
B R Ambedkar
were at the centre of the Republic Day celebrations on Sunday as two tableaux on the Kartavya Path highlighted the journey of the Constitution, something that has been the focus of the political class since the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
The celebrations started with the commentary highlighting the adoption of the Constitution and its importance, and Ambedkar also found a place of pride in a flower carpet depiction just opposite the main pavilion from where President Droupadi Murmu and others watched the Republic Day parade.
The Central Public Works Department's tableau displayed a grand replica of the Constitution and the Ashok Chakra, which depicted the "wheel of time". A brief address of Babasaheb Ambedkar was replayed in the background when it passed the Kartavya Path — "Our difficulty is how to make the heterogeneous mass that we have today, take a decision in common and march in a cooperative way on that road which is bound to lead us to unity. Our difficulty is not with regard to the ultimate; our difficulty is with regard to the beginning."
The social justice ministry tableau's theme was also based on the Constitution and its journey, portraying it as the cornerstone of the nation's heritage, development and guidance for the future. The tableau captured the essence of justice, equality, and liberty, showcasing how the Constitution continues to shape India into a united, progressive and inclusive society. The centrepiece of the tableau was a replica of the Constitution, with its Preamble displayed prominently in both Hindi and English.
The rotating insignia marking 75 years since the Constitution's adoption emphasised the enduring legacy of the document. Intricate patterns, inspired by the Constitution's original illustrations, were a key highlight, including the Zebu bull, symbolising strength and leadership from the chapter ‘The Union and its Territory'.
Discussions around the Constitution and the legacy of Ambedkar have been the centre of political discussions with the opposition accusing the BJP-led central govt of trying to destroy it. On the other hand, BJP has highlighted the steps taken in the last 10 years to strengthen the Constitution and honour Ambedkar, while alleging that the Congress-led opposition bloc never gave due respect to the Constitution's framer.
