BENGALURU: After a disappointing performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections,
Congress
found consolation in the
legislative council elections
held on June 3 by winning two seats previously held by the BJP-JD(S) alliance. Governing Congress and the opposition BJP-JD(S) alliance shared equal honours, each securing three seats in the six seats for teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies.
Congress candidates won in Bengaluru Graduates’, Karnataka Southeast teachers’, and Karnataka Northeast graduates’ seats.
JD(S) won in the Karnataka Southwest teachers’ and Karnataka South teachers’ constituencies.
Congress now has 34 members, BJP 30
The BJP’s sole victory came from the Karnataka Southwest graduates’ constituency.
The vote counting, which began on Thursday, concluded on Friday.
Following these elections, the Congress now has 34 members in the 75-member House, four short of a majority. The BJP has 30 members as sitting member Kota Shrinivas Poojary has been elected to the Lok Sabha. The JD (S) has 8 members.
The results is seen as a setback for the BJPJD(S) alliance, particularly as they lost two seats to the Congress compared to the previous elections.
The BJP suffered significant losses, relinquishing its long-held strongholds in Karnataka Southeast teachers’ and Bengaluru Gradu ates’ seats to the Congress, marking the first time in nearly four decades.
A Devegowda and YA Narayanaswamy, prominent BJP candidates, were defeated by Congress’ Ramoji Gowda and D T Srinivas, respectively.
The results also delivered surprises, with several key candidates losing. Marithibbegowda, who defected from the JD(S) and contested on a Congress ticket eyeing a fifth term, lost in the Karnataka South teachers’ seat.
Similarly, Ayanur Manjunath, who switched from the BJP to the Congress, was defeated in the Karnataka Southwest graduates’ constituency.
A Narayanaswamy of the BJP, vying for a fourth term from the Karnataka Southeast teachers’ constituency, too lost.
