MUMBAI: In an attempt to keep
BBA
,
BMS
and
BCA
courses outside the purview of central regulator,
colleges
have asked state govt for permission to alter their nomenclature. If these courses come within the ambit of All India Council for Technical Education (
AICTE
), colleges will have to hire twice the faculty and invest more in infrastructure.
If the state gives its nod to the proposal, BBA will be titled BCom (business administration), BMS will be rechristened BCom (management studies) and BCA will be BSc (computer application).
The programmes will then continue to be under their respective universities.
Principals are protesting the decision to bring these programmes under AICTE since it was first suggested by its chairman in Nov 2023 and then formally announced in Dec.
“We had written to Mumbai University authorities about difficulties in running these programmes if colleges need to implement AICTE norms. We had a high-level discussion on Wednesday with authorities in the presence of UGC chairman when he was here for MU convocation,” said T A Shiware, president of Mumbai College Principals’ Federation.
The UGC chairman heard the principals’ woes and suggested that instead of using the BCom nomenclature, the programmes be termed BS (business administration) and the like, as Bachelor of science degrees are internationally recognised and then graduating for a master’s degree will be seamless for students. Principals will meet state govt officials on Monday. If approved, the “Maharashtra model” may lead to other states taking this route.
Colleges’ concerns regarding AICTE norms revolve around two aspects: faculty and facilities.
