PRAYAGRAJ: Information pertaining to several exotic and rare birds was presented for the masses through a desk calendar featuring pictures of some selected birds clicked by advanced laparoscopy and cancer surgeon of the
Sangam
city, Dr.
Arpit Bansal
.
The calendar was released recently at an event organised in the city which was jointly organised by TOI and
Jeevan Jyoti
Hospital, Prayagraj.
The collection of these exotic birds has been titled 'Winged Wonders' and was released by director of the hospital, Dr
Vandana Bansal
.
Dr Arpit, who is an acclaimed wildlife and bird photographer, has included pictures of birds found in the tropical forests of
Costa Rica
in the calendar. It also carries a description of each species so that people can be made aware and encouraged for their conservation.
Dr Arpit said it’s very challenging to get the pictures of birds and shared the experience of clicking the photos of 1,121 bird species in India and clinching the 6th spot on the list of top 100 birders in the country, as per the world’s reputed website www.ebird.org.
Remarkably, Dr Arpit is the only doctor in the list of top 20 bird watchers and the only medico to complete photography of over 1100 bird species found in India. This year’s calendar stands apart as it indicates ecological interdependence globally and highlights avian diversity.
Dr Arpit said, "Both Costa Rica and India boast of incredibly diverse ecosystems. This diversity allows for a wide range of bird species, each adapted to its specific environment. Birds from both regions are known for their striking and vibrant plumage." For instance, the Summer Tanager and the Indian Scarlet Minivet both display brilliant red colours. This similarity in appearance, despite geographical distance, illustrates the parallel evolutionary paths in bird species, he added.
