Code Blue declared as bitter chill engulfs New York City: What it means

NEW YORK (PIX11) – A Code Blue has been declared for New York City Wednesday night as temperatures are expected to dip under 32 degrees.

The weather emergency is issued when temperatures drop to below freezing between 4 p.m. and 8 a.m., according to the Department of Homeless Services. If you're homeless or just seeking shelter, you won't be denied at any homeless shelter during a Code Blue.

Drop-in shelters will also be open for 24 hours.

Temperatures are expected to remain unseasonably cold throughout the week, not reaching the 40s on Wednesday, according to PIX11 meteorologists.

Snow and rain showers could hit the tri-state area by midweek.

If you see someone who is homeless or at-risk during a Code Blue, the DHS encourages you to call 311.
