NEW YORK (PIX11) – If you got a COVID-19 test from CityMD during the height of the pandemic, you might see a refund coming your way.
Attorney General Leticia James announced that thousands of New Yorkers were wrongfully charged for COVID-19 testing at CityMD between March 2020 and November 2022.
More than $6.9 million in refunds is expected to be sent to patients who were wrongfully charged. Additionally, the attorney general’s office canceled $7 million in debt for people who took tests at CityMD.
An investigation by the attorney general found that the urgent care provider improperly billed patients during a time in which state and federal laws prevented them from doing so. Some people were charged up to two years after services were provided.
Following the investigation, more than 87,000 people have had their debts cancelled while more than 215,000 patients have been refunded.
“CityMD’s actions added unnecessary stress and financial burdens to patients seeking essential COVID-19 testing at the height of the pandemic,” said James.
New Yorkers who might qualify for a refund may receive a letter in the mail or an email notifying them of the refund. Patients who believe they may have been a victim can also contact the OAG Health Care Bureau online or call 1-800-428-9071.
