MANHATTAN. N.Y. (PIX11) – Yu and Me Books is hosting its grand reopening on Sunday after a fire gutted the popular bookstore.
The owner of the Chinatown bookstore took to Instagram this week to share the exciting news:
“We are so excited to welcome you all back to our Yu & Me Books home 🏡 on 44 Mulberry St back in Chinatown ❤️ We can’t wait to shed tears, laugh loudly, and open our hearts with all of you who have made us feel at home. See yu all soon!”
Yu and Me Books is a cornerstone in the community and had to close due to extensive damage from a blaze that started in a residential unit above the store on July 4, 2023. The Asian American-owned bookstore suffered smoke and water damage to inventory, furniture, and the building itself, the owner shared on Instagram.
Shortly after the fire, thousands of donations poured in from the community, writers, and celebrities to help with fees, staff wages and other expenses. Yu and Me Books quickly surpassed its GoFundMe page goal of $150,000 and accumulated nearly $400,000 in a short period.
The store did reopen at the Marketline on Sept. 16, 2023, for a brief time before announcing its last day at that location on Dec. 31, 2023.
The grand reopening will start at 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the bookstore’s original location.
