TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON, N.J. (PIX11) – A child allegedly seen by a witness being put into the trunk of a car in a New Jersey town was the result of teenagers playing, according to the Township of Washington police.

A witness told officers they saw a woman get out of a maroon Toyota sedan around 4:45 p.m. at the 600 block of Chestnut Street, according to authorities. The witness then saw the woman walking to the back of the car and helping what appeared to be a child, between 7 and 8 years old, get into the trunk of the sedan before leaving the scene, police said.

Police used surveillance footage from the area to locate the owner of the car, according to authorities. They were able to confirm the two people involved were actually teenagers, one of whom entered the trunk on purpose before exiting shortly after.

Police are reminding parents and teenagers about being safe while driving.
