NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – The allure of a speakeasy or stumbling across a hidden bar is an integral part of New York City culture.
So much so, that there are over a hundred of these concealed establishments sprinkled throughout the city. Matthew Collins, 39, took to Reddit to share his custom Google Map, detailing a massive list of hidden bars and restaurants.
Collins is not new to the world of city speakeasies and enjoying a well-made drink behind a hidden door. He's visited more than half of the locations on the map and along with his wife, they visit a cocktail bar every weekend.
“I’ve been in the cocktail and cocktail adjacent world for a while, and I started making maps of places during the pandemic – kind of like mapping out where I wanted to go,” he told PIX11 News.
The map has turned into a collective effort after being posted, and Collins is noting other’s suggestions and adding them to the map. The map categorizes the establishments with three different colored pins titled “hidden, sort of hidden, not sure.”
For those looking to try out a hidden cocktail bar, Collins recommends Sunken Harbor in Brooklyn and George Bang Bang in Manhattan.
“Those two [have] unbelievable beverage programs, and they’re just really cool spaces.”
