MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Did you feel it? Where were you when the earthquake shook New York City?
Those questions are still being asked as New Yorkers begin their weekend and share their experiences with each other after a 4.8-magnitude earthquake shook the tri-state area Friday morning.
Social media was flooded with videos and pictures of objects rattling around.
Tudor City resident Linda Fonseca described her experience when the earthquake happened.
“At first I felt the rumble, with like a slight boom,” Fonseca said. “First I thought it was part of the construction. The next thing I know, my boss came in and she was like, “Oh my God, did you feel that?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, what was that?’ And she was like, ‘I don’t know, but that was weird.’ Then we got the notification that it was an earthquake … We were both in shock.”
Inside the United Nations, speakers paused as the room rumbled. One person joked, "You're making the ground shake."
At the Pershing Square cafe near Grand Central Terminal, patrons said one of the chandeliers came crashing to the ground.
"When we felt the shaking, we weren't sure what it was. We were thinking maybe it was a truck up above, and then the chandelier just collapsed right in front of us, like a foot from us. Thank God it was a foot in front of us," said a man who was inside the cafe but didn't give his name.
Management at the Pershing Square cafe declined to speak about the incident to PIX11 News.
There have been no reports of major injuries or structural damage in New York City as a result of the earthquake.
