Celine Dion, the music legend behind timeless hits like 'My Heart Will Go On' and 'The Power of Love', is determined to grace the stage once again. This unwavering spirit comes in the face of her diagnosis with stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that causes muscle rigidity and spasms.
Dion first opened up about her condition in December 2022, postponing a number of shows. However, her recent interview with Hoda Kotb on NBC's Today Show revealed a fighter's spirit. Despite the challenges the disease presents, Dion declared, "I'm going to go back onstage, even if I have to crawl, even if I have to talk with my hands. I will. I will."
She went on to say, "I am Celine Dion, because today my voice will be heard for the first time, not just because I have to, or because I need to. It’s because I want to. And I miss it."
For the unversed, the neurological condition causes stiffness, and can affect a person's ability to move or even speak.
The impact of stiff person syndrome has been significant for Dion. The disorder has affected her mobility and singing abilities, forcing her to cancel residencies and tours. Yet, her passion for performing remains undimmed. "I’m not going to scare my fans. I’m not going to come home tonight and tell my kids that I had to stop the show. I’m going to come onstage because I’m ready. And my vocal cords will not scare me, because I’m going to be ready, and I’m going to hit those notes," Dion affirmed.
Dion's dedication to her craft and her fans is truly inspiring. "I don’t want to be scared of myself and questioning my music, my songs. I don’t. Because music is a language. And it’s in everybody’s life," says the 'I Surrender' singer.
The trailer for Celine Dion's documentary, 'I Am Celine', released on May 24. The two-minute trailer offers a glimpse of what one can expect from the documentary. In the trailer, an emotional Celine is seen opening up about her health struggles. The iconic singer was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition called Stiff Person syndrome in 2022.
Via her latest interview, Celine proved one thing - her powerful voice may take a different form, but it seems certain fans will hear her sing once again.
