TIMES SQUARE, Manhattan (PIX11) – New York is turning into the city of love with a giant heart, in the heart of the city.
The sculpture titled “Love Ever After” by artist Pernilla Ohrstedt was unveiled in the middle of Times Square on Tuesday. The three-dimensional heart flickers and shifts in color and shape as the angle of its perception changes.
Standing at 50 feet tall, the geometric heart was created using over four dozen oyster cages in collaboration with the Billion Oyster Project.
“From the heart of New York City to its shoreline, our sculpture broadcasts love for people, community and environment, and highlights one of the city’s most exciting ecological initiatives, Billion Oyster Project, to the global audience of Times Square,” said Ohrstedt.
After the installation, the cages will be returned to the shoreline where they will be used to create oyster reefs.
Ohrstedt’s creation comes by way of the 17th annual Times Square Arts’ Love & Design Competition.
