Caught on camera: Felony accused attacks US judge, leaps over tables in courtroom

10 months ago 17

A 30-year-old defendant, violently attacked Clark County District Judge Mary Kay Holthus during his sentencing for a felony battery case in a Las Vegas courtroom.

The courtroom's video captured on January 3, Redden leaping over the defense table and the judge's bench, landing on Judge Holthus and causing her to fall back against a wall. Although Judge Holthus sustained minor injuries, she did not require hospitalisation. However, a courtroom marshal who intervened suffered a bleeding gash on his forehead and a dislocated shoulder, necessitating hospital treatment.

The attack occurred around 11 am at the Regional Justice Center, where Redden was facing imprisonment.

Moments before the assault, Redden had pleaded for leniency, claiming he always tried to do the right thing. As the judge indicated her intention to incarcerate him, Redden reacted with expletives and charged. Following the incident, Redden now faces additional felony charges, including battery on a protected person. The court has since been reviewing protocols to enhance security and protect all individuals within the courthouse.
