Case of whooping cough reported at New Jersey high school

NEW JERSEY (PIX11) -- At least one person in the High Point Regional High School community has developed whooping cough, a highly contagious respiratory disease, according to officials.

 A letter sent by school officials on Thursday details that the state Department of Health has been notified about the case, NorthJersey reported.

Whooping cough, or pertussis, can cause coughing fits. The name of the disease comes from the whooping noise infected people might make when they try to breathe in after coughing. The disease can be treated with antibiotics.

In 2022, there were 2,388 reported whooping cough cases nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
