NEW YORK (PIX11) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced a major canned tuna recall for many popular chain retailers.
The company Tri-Union Seafoods recalled some of its canned tuna products after learning of a manufacturing defect involving the “easy open” pull tab lid.
According to officials from the company, the tab could compromise the can's seal and cause it to leak over time or cause contamination with clostridium botulinum, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.
The recall applies to canned tuna sold at Trader Joe’s locations in New York and New Jersey. Additionally, products sold at many independent and chain retailers in New Jersey are impacted.
Customers are warned not to use the recalled products even if they don't look or smell spoiled. Anyone who may have purchased the products should throw them away or return them for a refund.
A full list of recalled tuna, can codes, and "best if used by" dates can be found on the FDA's website.
Residents can also contact Tri-Union Seafoods for "a retrieval kit" and a replacement product coupon at [email protected] or 833-374-0171.
