FORDHAM HEIGHTS, The Bronx (PIX11) – A discreet camera inside a D train helped police identify suspects in the fatal confrontation of a man in the Bronx, according to the NYPD.
Police said they're searching for 24-year-old Justin Herde, 38-year-old Betty Cotto, and 42-year-old Alfredo Trinidad in relation to the death of 45-year-old William Alvarez in Fordham Heights. The three suspects allegedly sat near Alvarez on the subway Friday morning, according to authorities.
Police said words were exchanged, followed by a physical fight that was one-on-one before all three attacked. One of the suspects then allegedly stabbed or shot Alvarez, according to authorities.
Alvarez was rushed out of the East 182nd Street station, but did not survive, police said. He suffered from a puncture wound to the chest, according to authorities.
The MTA said it's making progress in removing weapons from subways in the last two months. At least 16 guns have been confiscated from subway cars, MTA CEO Janno Lieber said.
More than 1,000 train cars, which is 15% of the city's subway system, are now equipped with cameras.
