Around 30% of the electorate exercised their franchise till 11am on Wednesday. As many as 71,044 people - 36,782 men, 34,261 women and a transgender - cast their votes till then.
DMK candidate Anniyur Siva alias A Sivashanmugam, 53, cast his vote in his village Anniyur while PMK candidate C Anbumani, 66, exercised his franchise at Panaiyur.
NTK’s Abinaya Ponnivalavan, 28, belongs to the Villupuram assembly segment.
A total of 29 candidates are in the fray, and the main contest is between ruling DMK party and PMK. There are 2.37 lakh voters – 1.16 lakh men, 1.2 lakh women and 29 others.
The votes will be counted on July 13 and the results will be declared on the same day.
The seat became vacant after DMK MLA N Pugazhenthi died in April after a prolonged illness.
