BROWNSVILLE, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- City officials announced a $160 million investment has been included in the FY 2025 Adopted Budget to rebuild the Brownsville Recreation Center in Brooklyn.
The project comes on the heels of a $20 million reconstruction project that began in 2016 but preliminary work found significant damage and deterioration.
"This historic contribution to fully rebuild the 70-year-old Brownsville Recreation Center honors the need for safe spaces, improved facilities, and expansive programming as we build a brand-new, state-of-the art recreation center in the heart of Brownsville,” said First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright.
NYC Parks and the Department of Design and Construction are working to build the new state-of-the-art facility quickly and cost-efficiently. The building will be designed with extensive input from members of the Brownsville community.
While demolition and construction are ongoing, NYC Parks will open interim spaces in Brownsville for residents to have access to classes and resources offered by NYC Parks’ recreation centers.
