BROWNSVILLE, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- A Brooklyn chef is giving back to her community by teaching free cooking classes.
It’s part of a citywide push to help neighborhoods be healthy. Most of the students are families who are learning something new.
Moya Dewar, 38, is a professional chef and is leading the class on how to cook. Dewar said everyone is welcome in her classes.
Dewar said the neighborhood of Brownsville can be a tough place to find fresh fruits and vegetables, and the class is a bright spot. She teaches families how to eat healthy on a budget.
Dewar is more than a chef. She is a community health worker for the New York City health department. She said she’s a health advocate with an apron. Dewar said instead of working at her desk, she created the free weekly cooking workshop in the kitchen at the Brownsville Neighborhood Health Action Center. Her new program is called “Come Cook with Moya.”
There are three health centers like this run by New York City's health department in Brownsville, East Harlem and the Bronx.
