BROWNSVILLE, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- The spirit of collaboration is blossoming in Brownsville, Brooklyn.
Residents are joining hands with the New York City Parks Department to breathe new life into a neglected green space at the corner of Thomas S. Boyland Street and Livonia Avenue.
Their collective vision? A thriving community garden that fosters connection and green thumbs alike.
This initiative is a multi-pronged effort.
To raise the necessary funds, the community has launched a GoFundMe campaign, seeking support from near and far.
The project is being bolstered by the expertise and resources of the Parks Department's GreenThumb program, a vital supporter of community gardens citywide.
To kick things off, a volunteer day dubbed "It's All About Brownsville Day" is scheduled for March 30 at 11 a.m. Participants will be able to learn valuable skills like gardening and carpentry, clear overgrown areas, build raised garden beds, and lay the groundwork for future planting endeavors.
Kyleen Sanchez, a representative from the GreenThumb program, emphasizes the collaborative spirit that underpins the project and acknowledges the importance of addressing ongoing challenges.
"One of the challenges is ensuring that we're upkeeping these community gardens so that they stay active and communicating to the public that these are spaces being used for the good and it's providing to the community," Sanchez said.
