MADURAI: A 22-year-old man hacked his 25-year-old sister to death soon after beheading her boyfriend, who belonged to a different caste, near Thirumangalam in

Madurai

on Tuesday night. He also chopped off one his mother's wrists when she tried to intervene. Police said the accused and his sister belonged to moopar caste while the boyfriend was of kallar caste, all of them non-dalits.

Police said the deceased, A Mahalakshmi of Kombadi, and N Sathishkumar, 28, were in a relationship. Around four years ago, Mahalakshmi got married to a man from Valayankulam but they got divorced soon after following irreconcilable differences. She was living with her parents at Kombadi when she fell in love with Sathishkumar of the same village. "Her younger brother Praveenkumar did not approve of the relationship and warned his sister against contacting Sathishkumar. However, Mahalakshmi did not pay heed and continued the affair," said a police officer.
Around 9:20 pm on Tuesday, Praveenkumar waylaid Sathishkumar on the Kombadi-Othaveedu road as he was returning from work. He assaulted him with a billhook, beheaded him and placed the head at a theatre stage building nearby. According to police, the accused then went home and slit Mahalakshmi's throat with the billhook. As his mother A Selvi, 45, intervened and tried to pacify him, he hacked her right wrist and chopped it off. As Mahalakshmi died on the spot, Praveenkumar fled.
Based on Sathishkumar's brother's complaint, Koodakovil police registered a

murder

case and arrested Praveenkumar. The bodies of the deceased were sent for postmortem examination to Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH). The condition of Selvi remains stable.
