EAST FLATBUSH, Brooklyn (PIX11) --- The gunman shot and killed by police in Brooklyn on Monday was firing at a couple that was trying to mug him, according to law enforcement sources.
The 20-year-old man was chasing and shooting at a man, 19, and a woman near Remsen Avenue and East 57th Street in East Flatbush around 5:50 p.m., according to the NYPD. Sources said that the gunman was arguing with the couple who tried to mug him before shots rang out.
Uniformed officers in an unmarked car then spotted the 20-year-old man firing multiple rounds before discharging their weapons, hitting the man several times, police said. The 20-year-old man died at the hospital. His gun was recovered at the scene.
“As the four officers in the unmarked car turned the corner, they observed the shooter firing numerous rounds chasing a male and a female,” NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said Monday night. “Our officers jump out quickly and they take care of the threat. The male was shot numerous times.”
Henry Massop, 60, was shot twice during the gunfire but it was unclear if the man was struck by police or the 20-year-old, authorities said. Massop was hit in the torso and the arm and needed surgery to remove one of the bullets, he told PIX11 News Tuesday.
"I feel the pain but at least they got him down because that guy could be more dangerous," Massop said.
The couple was not hit during the shooting. The 19-year-old man was taken into custody at the scene for unrelated robbery charges, sources said.
Four cops were taken to the hospital for evaluation after the incident, police said.
The investigation is ongoing.
