BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and love is not only in the air, but it's also ringing up big bucks for Brooklyn small businesses. Shops like The Chocolate Room and Midtown Florist and Greenhouse are experiencing a surge in sales as customers snap up sweet treats and vibrant blooms for their sweethearts.
"It's all about love and chocolate," declares John Payson, co-founder of The Chocolate Room. His shop, already infused with the aroma of cocoa, is buzzing with anticipation. "We're definitely busier than last year, and that's been a trend since the fall," Payson said.
This year, Payson and his team are prepared. They've taken a proactive approach, diligently anticipating demand and planning accordingly. "We were ahead of the demands this year," Payson explained, contrasting with last year's scramble. "This year, we feel ready."
Across Brooklyn, a similar scene unfolds. At Midtown Florist and Greenhouse, owner Barry Geiger is preparing for a similar onslaught of love-struck customers. "For the business, it means moving ahead towards the rest of the year," Geiger said, highlighting the importance of Valentine's Day as a financial springboard. "We're doing better every year," Geiger added, reflecting on the growing trend.
According to the National Retail Federation, Valentine's Day spending hit an average of $193 per person in 2023 compared to $175 in 2022.
Both shop owners report an increasing trend this year.
