BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) --- A 13-year-old boy who was shot to death on his way home from a Nets game last week FaceTimed his mother after he took four bullets to the body, authorities said Tuesday.
Troy Gill called his mother after eight shots rang out near New York Avenue and Bergen Street outside Berger Park in Crown Heights at around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, according to NYPD Chief of Citywide Investigations Jerry O'Sullivan. The teen was struck in the chest, in the back, and twice in the arm before he called his mom as he was running down the block, police said.
The boy, a student at IS 390, was just a couple blocks from home and his family rushed out to search for him after the heartbreaking call, officials said.
"It's a tragic case. This homicide is extremely troubling," O'Sullivan said. "We're not going to rest until this case is solved."
Gill was found on the sidewalk by a passerby walking his dog, police said. Officers rendered aid before the teen was rushed to the hospital, where he died. The boy was unable to speak when he was found.
Authorities believe the boy was targeted but would not say if it was a gang-related incident. A white SUV was seen leaving the scene, police said.
"This was not a random shooting," O'Sullivan said. "I feel confident we'll get to the bottom of this."
There have been no arrests.
