Months after influencer Revant Himatsingka highlighted the high added sugar content in a Bournvita product, the brand has now reduced the quantity of added sugar.
Influencer Revant Himatsingka celebrated Bournvita's decision to slash added sugar content in new video.
Almost eight months after controversy over the high sugar content in Cadbury's Bournvita chocolate 'health' drink erupted, the brand has now reduced the quantity of added sugar by 14.4 percent.
The move comes after health influencer Revant Himatsingka, popularly known as Food Pharmer, highlighted the drink’s high sugar content in a video shared in April. The clip went crazy viral and the company drew widespread criticism for the same.
Previously, the Bournvita product contained 37.4 grams of added sugar per 100 grams of powder. The revised formula has a reduced sugar content of 32.2 grams per 100 grams.
After the company decided to reduce added sugar content, Himatsingka shared a video on Instagram and called it a "Big Win."
''Big win! Probably the first time in history that an INSTAGRAM REEL led to a food giant reducing its sugar content! One video resulted in a 15% reduction in sugar. Imagine if all Indians started reading food labels. Companies wouldn't dare falsely market themselves,'' he wrote in the caption.
''This fight isn't against Bournvita. The fight is against any company that sells junk food but markets itself as healthy! The fight is to get 140 crore Indians eating healthier! One company changing its sugar content, will result in a chain reaction, and every company will be slightly more careful now,'' he added.
In April, Bournvita had sent a legal notice to Revant Himatsingka and labelled the claims made by him as “unscientific” as “distorted facts”.
